A Message from Huston-Tillotson University
The health and welfare of the Huston-Tillotson University campus community are of the utmost importance.
You may be aware that the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has reported cases of influzena A H1N1 worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified the outbreak as a global pandemic. Everyone can help to control outbreaks by following a few WHO guidelines: - avoid touching your mouth and nose;
- clean hands thoroughly with soap and water, or cleanse them with an alcohol-based hand rub on a regular basis (especially if touching the mouth and nose, or surfaces that are potentially contaminated);
- avoid close contact with people who might be ill;
- reduce the time spent in crowded settings, if possible;
- improve airflow in your living space by opening windows;
- practice good health habits including adequate sleep, eating nutritious food, and keeping physically active.
Incoming students should arrive with up-to-date immunization records, their own health coverage, or plan to enroll in the University's health plan. Students have access to and are encouraged to see the campus nurse if they are experiencing flu-like symptoms. The nurse advises everyone to follow the above guidelines while maintaining a healthy diet, getting plenty of exercise, taking sufficient vitamin C, washing hands frequently with soap, coughing and sneezing into your sleeve, and staying home, if you experience flu symptoms or if you are caring for individuals with flu-like symptoms.
The H1N1 vaccine is limited to high-risk populations. To get further details, call Austin Travis County Health and Human Services at 512.972.5520.
